It was the final day of the Championships and for some the competing was over, and they could relax. However, for those participating in the Destruction Power Test, Special Technique and/or Team events the competition was far from over. Day 3 commenced with the Individual Male Power Test and Individual Female Special Technique. The day started well for TEAM- UK as I was able to win my third Gold in the power event with Steven Watson picking up the Silver . The Girls did everything put win the Special Technique, winning both Bronzes and the Silver . The Girls then moved to the Power Test and the Men to the Special Technique. The UK managed to pick up a Bronze in the Special technique, but unfortunately the Girls were unable to pick up a medal in the individual Female Power Test. Now for what everyone had been waiting for, the Team events. The Girls picked up a Silver in the Team Special Technique but where unable to finish within the top 4 in the Power. Whilst we were waiting to start the Team Special (as some one had broken the Special Technique apparatus) we saw the Girls move into the Final of the pattern after beating the Home Nation. The Final was close, but the decision was eventually awarded to the Canadians, a heartbreak for the Girls team and the coach Lucy Wolf. The Girls used this to fuel their fire, and eliminated the Australian Girls Sparring Team on centre stage. The Stage was set for a dramatic and exiting final, England vs. Argentina. The Girls performed to a fantastic standard, beating the Argentinean Girls 3-0. The Girls therefore added another Gold and Sliver to TEAM-UK’s medal haul. Thanks Girls, what a standard you gave us to emulate. But we did. We began with a victory in the Special Technique, winning Gold. We then missed out on a Silver narrowly to the Americans in the Team Power, and therefore winning the Bronze. After losing the Team Pattern to team Argentina, me and Steve were desperate to beat the Argentineans more so in this particular event. After a close round, the Argentineans were awarded the decision, much to the disappointment of the Team and the Coach. We were desperate now to win the sparring and to pay the Argentineans back for the Pattern Defeat. However, the Australian Team stood in our way at the semi-final stage. We managed to win the first three fights, sending us straight into the Final against either Wales or Argentina. The Argentinean Team emulated us and defeated Wales 3-0, setting the scene for what was in my opinion the most exiting final of the tournament. Centre stage beckoned, and so did the attention of every person on the Arena. Mike Whitlock was first up, suffering much what the Canadian that Mathew fought suffered, the Argentinean avoided mike for the majority of the fight scoring but a few clear cut points towards the end of the fight. Argentina 1-0 England. I was up next, and pulled the score back to 1-1. Mathew again stood up against the Giant of the opposition, and in my opinion would have won if it not for the last shot of the fight. The results a draw, taking the score to 2-2. Steven Watson very closely suffered defeat taking the score to Argentina 3-2 England. All rested on this last fight, and on Mitch. Matched against someone far heavier than him, he just lost the fight. Argentina 4-2 England. This meant that we were able to add 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronzes to TEAM-UK’s medal tally. The 8 th ITF Junior World Championships was over, and the final medal presentation would officially end the Tournament. All the Masters gathered behind the podium and all the umpires and officials in front. All of the remaining medallists and Teams received their medals and then the overall awards where presented. Before the overall awards where presented, Choi Jung Hwa made a quick address to all the competitors and those who where in attendance. Argentina where awarded the overall Male Team award, Australia the overall Female Team award. Wales where awarded the overall female award and I was awarded the overall male competitor representing England. In addition, history was made, England had amalgamated a total of 10 Gold’s 8 Silver and 13 Bronze scoring 31 points in total. This meant that for the first time England where the best competitive nation at a World Championships. What a way to end a Tournament, and what a way we did.
