VI Jnr World Championships 2002
Buenos Aires
Argentina
Having prepared the best way we could for what was to be a 15 hour flight all our attention was to be focused on getting to Argentina and bring back some World Championship Silver Ware.
The Competition would be held over 3 Days, the Opening Ceremony, which we must say was very inventive and entertaining was based on a Men in Black thyme, which had been put together by the Taekwon-Do Association of Argentina (TAA).
The crowd needless to say loved every minute of it, the atmosphere and the other things which followed made this a special 1st time World Championship Competition for us.
Some funny moments we remember and will be with us for sometime to come, one such moment was our arrival at the Hotel.
Being new arrivals in a new country we had not been informed that the Hotel was situated close to an avenue, which was well known in the area for? Men dressed as Ladies.
The situation was pointed out to us by that ever reliable recon team, Jermaine and Lucy.
You cannot imagine the response from some of the lads who, in all fairness were very well behaved and courteous to all our hosts! Even the men, we mean even the ladies, the men, oh you know what we mean!
Moving on swiftly.
The food we found over the course of the next few days, without a doubt was plentiful and the steaks where superb, yes we would agree some of the best steaks in the world come from Argentina, we still can not work out how they cooked them!
At the time of travel to Argentina, the economy was not as healthy as it could have been, so things were a bit cheaper compared to prices at home.
So a few people could not wait to shop and hunt down some bargains.
We were lucky as our close friend Leo, who lived Half an hour outside the city, had taken the time to show us around Buenos Aires, he in fact attended the Tournament as our unofficial Interpreter and came in very useful at times, cheers Leo we owe you one.
We had to travel by Coach to the venue, which made for a nice atmosphere and kept everyone together, bearing in mind that the England Team had been assembled from the Butf, Puma and the Gtuk.
We also had an additional UK Team, which had been made up from other organizations.
We all got along very well under the circumstances, Okay, back to the competition.
There were 3 rings in the stadium, the centre one was raised as Nick remembers as he had the honour of falling off it after a good right hook from a Russian.
Even though all our competitors trained hard, it was to be a heavy-duty comp, with the ambulance in attendance twice in the first day.
Luckily it turned out only minor injuries, however on the second day the contact was much less, which we all felt was sensible, we know things had been discussed the night before.
One of the things that stand out in my mind is a young man, expected to possibly win the -63KG division, this was to be the person Nick had to beat, but he really did not get going on the day.
He lost his first round or maybe second round fight and must have been very disappointed, he found Nick and wished him all the very best in his efforts to go on and win the division, what impressed me was, he was genuine in his actions.
The person we refer to is Lee Hollingsworth, who is now a 5th Degree ITA Instructor, and who we will always have time for.
Overall there was to be some great fights and some great performances, none more so than Leanne Musson who fought her way to a World Championship Gold Medal with a sterling performance in the sparring.
Closely followed by Nick Gardner , who was unlucky not to beat a good opponent and picked up the Silver Medal position in the Sparring, at the Medal Ceremony he only had to be called three times on to the podium to collect his Silver Medal, maybe he felt he should have had the Gold.
Nick also picked up 2 Bronze Medals for Male Team Pattern and Male Team Power.
As you know, we all went away not knowing what to expect, a hostile crowd, an escort to and from the competition venue was a bit unnerving.
A rather nasty exchange of views after some idiots decided to throw burgers at Lucy Wolf, not a wise thing to do, maybe doing a good job coaching our people to success left them thinking Ms Wolf was feeling peckish.
A few people trying to integrate with our supporters and out shout us! stupid or what, with Mrs Godden shouting orders to push them back to where they had come from, Andy Godden, yes you guessed it (Her Husband) doing as he was told, sorry Andy.
All in all a fantastic all round experience, cannot wait to do it all again, one of the best competitions so far, in our opinion.

Chris Quenby, Matthew Brunger, Jamaine Hemmings, we would like to hear from you so we can add you details to the list above.
Also Michael Bell and Grant Coddrington (Think that's the correct spelling for Grants surname) who both had memorable competitions.
The rest of the Ladies Team who consisted of a young Ms Bradshaw and Ms Musson have not had individual results posted as far as we know, so lets have them and we will put them with the Ladies above
To conclude we would like to extend our thanks to everyone who made this trip possible and the monies received as far as sponsorship was invaluable, Master Wolf who put in some long hours to prepare the Team in general, and a special thank you to Ms Wolf for the extra time spent on patterns etc, on this historic occasion, we really could not have been better prepared.
Lastly a thank you to all who made this trip possible and for the contributions made towards Sponsorship from Master Wolf and the BUTF, we feel sure we can speak for everyone in saying that this was appreciated by all who competed.
